Founded in 1948 as a university free from political interference, it was set up in the leafy suburb of Dahlem, long linked to Nobel prizewinning scientific research. Such connections are developed today through 17 collaborative research centres. Some 100 subjects are offered to 32,000 students by an academic staff of more than 4,800. This university is one of eleven German Universities of Excellence.
